March, 2005 - Homer, Alaska - Photographing

Everyone heard of "Jumping out from the frying pen into the fire" but
hardly anyone say "Getting out of the fridge into the freezer". When
I told my friends I am going to Alaska for my spring break. The response was
simple - "What?" I usually choose somewhere warm for my spring break but this year I decided to join a group of nature photographer who will do nothing but shooting birds all day long, with camera of cause. The trip leader was Weldon Lee who is a professional nature photographer- "Rocky Mountain Photo Adventures". A group of eight headed south to Homer early Sunday morning from Anchorage. The first thing we encountered was a serious traffic accident (not us, other guys on the road). Needless to say the first few shots I took on this trip was emergency vehicle, helicopter etc...... God bless those who injured in that accident. We ran through numerous mountains, valleys, saw a few fjords and glaciers. The scenery was breath taking. Cold but fresh. The sky was mostly grey along the way. The road was wet but not frozen, thank god for that. We spotted a few Eagles sitting on the pine trees along the way, few Moose along the road and occasionally heard myself snored. We arrived Homer six hours later, saw a long sand bar (a long strip of island) extended out to the bay when we came down the hill. That was the "Homer Sand Spit", the place that we drove back and forth the next five days to harass those Bald Eagles with telephoto lenses. Oh yes, do not forget Salty Dawg, the important land mark of Homer Sand Spit. When the cold wind is blowing, your bladder is not holding and your fingers loosed feeling, get in there, have a cold one in the warm bar.
